In Defense of Scottish Weather

“Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” – Sun Tzu

Having relocated to the Isle of Skye, the unreliability of Scottish weather was thrust upon me without relent. I would set off to climb in glorious sun, and arrive at the crag in the pouring rain.

After 5 sessions of this theme, I was getting a bit sick of it, Yet something in me kept me stoked to keep trying. It wasn't until I decided to set off in the rain that good sessions came my way and having battled the weather and come out on top, I was rewarded for my trials with a much greater feeling of accomplishment.

This mix of weather also led me to the end of many rainbows, cloud inversions, waterfalls and a huge mix of wildlife. Allowing me to experience more of what really makes Scotland special.

The wet days also encourage more varied adventure types. For me, a rainy day is the perfect time for an open water swim which brings an unexpected wildlife bonus; when the sky is dark you’re less obvious to the sea creatures below and less tourism means quiet seas, allowing you to get closer than ever.

When in Scotland, seizing all moments for adventure, no matter the weather, will create ripples in the water, leading to greater and greater waves as time goes on.
